In often underestimated factor in the success of tech companies--from software vendors Microsoft and Oracle to e-commerce sites Amazon.com and eBay--is the health of their developer ecosystems. Having thousands of outside coders building add-on applications becomes a virtuous circle, giving would-be customers more reason to buy, thus giving developers more reason to write code around that software or site, giving more customers a reason to buy.
