Thor Industries 3rd-Qtr Sales Rise 5 Percent, Above Expectations, As Backlog Posts a Record

JACKSON CENTER, Ohio (AP) -- Thor Industries Inc.'s sales rose 5 percent in its fiscal third quarter as it posted a record order backlog, the recreation vehicle and bus maker said Monday.

Thor's third-quarter sales were $762.8 million, up from $727.7 million a year earlier. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected sales of $759.2 million, on average.

The company's backlog on Oct. 31 was a record for the end of the quarter, at $476 million, up 17 percent from $406.3 million a year earlier.

"Strong order backlog bodes well for positive results in fiscal 2008," Chairman Wade Thompson said in a statement.

RV sales rose 4 percent in the third quarter to $663.5 million from $635.9 million, as bus sales rose 8 percent to $99.3 million from $91.8 million.

Thor shares fell $1.18 to $45.57 in morning trading.
