ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Diversified conglomerate 3M Co. said Tuesday it settled its lithium ion battery cathode patent suits with CDW Corp. and Hitachi Koki USA. Under terms of the agreement, CDW and Hitachi Koki certified that they import and sell batteries containing 3M's patented cathode materials only from manufacturers licensed by 3M under prior settlements. As a result, 3M requested that CDW and Hitachi Koki be dismissed from the U.S. International Trade Commission investigation of lithium ion battery technology. The company also dismissed a parallel patent suit in the District of Minnesota. 3M's cathode materials are used in lithium ion batteries, which power laptop computers, mobile phones and portable electronic devices. The company has reached earlier settlements with battery manufacturers Panasonic Corp. of North America, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Sony Corp., Sony Electronics Inc., Sanyo Electric Co., and Sanyo Energy U.S.A. Corp. 3M also reached settlements with Batteries.com, Lenovo (US) Inc., and Lenovo Group Ltd. 3M said all lawsuits related to the company's battery cathode patents are now settled. Shares fell 37 cents to $85.60 in morning trading.
